Omeprazole
Description:
Hyposec (Omeprazole) reduces gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the enzyme of H⁺, K⁺ - ATPase "the proton pump" in the parietal cell. Omeprazole inhibits both basal and stimulated acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus. The onset of action is rapid and reversible; control of gastric secretion is achieved with a once daily dose.
Indications:
Hyposec is indicated for:
- Short term treatment of duodenal ulcer.
- Short term treatment of reflux oesophagitis.
- Short term treatment of gastric ulcer.
- Management of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Dosage & Administration:
Hyposec should be taken immediately before meals, preferably in the morning.
Hyposec may be taken with antacids, especially for the first few doses, to aid in the relief of pain.
Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer and reflux oesophagitis: The recommended dosage is (1 capsule) 20 mg Hyposec once daily.
In patients with duodenal ulcer relief of symptoms is rapid and healing occurs within 2 weeks in most cases. In some cases, however, healing may require a further 2 weeks treatment period.
In patients with gastric ulcer, reflux oesophagitis relief of symptoms occurs within 4 weeks. In some cases, however, healing may require a further 4 weeks treatment period.
In patients refractory to other treatment regiments, (2 capsules) 40 mg Hyposec once daily for 4 weeks was required to achieve healing in patients with duodenal ulcer and 8 weeks in patients with gastric ulcer or reflux oesophagitis.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: The recommended initial dose is (3 capsules) 60 mg Hyposec once daily, the dosage being adjusted as needed and therapy continued as long as clinically indicated. More than 90% of the patients maintained on doses of Omeprazole 20 - 120 mg daily. With doses above 80 mg daily, the dose should be divided and given twice daily.
Contraindications:
It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Omeprazole.
There are no other known contraindications to the use of Hyposec.
Precautions:
Use with caution in patients with liver disease.
The possibility of malignancy should be excluded when gastric ulcer is suspected as omeprazole may alleviate symptoms and delay diagnosis.
If the product is used for more than one year, the Magnesium blood level may be decreased.
Use during pregnancy and lactation: Consult your physician before using this medicine or any other medication.
Drug interactions:
Omeprazole can prolong the elimination of drugs that are metabolized by oxidation in the liver such as diazepam, warfarin and phenytoin.
It may also reduce absorption of ketoconazole and Itraconazole.
Adverse Effects:
Omeprazole is well tolerated and its adverse effects are mild and transient. Rarely reported disturbances include, nausea, diarrhea, headache, constipation and flatulence.
Presentation:
Hyposec Capsules: Each capsule contains Omeprazole 20 mg as enteric-coated granules. Jars of 14 capsules. Unit packs of 10 and 20 capsules and hospital packs of different sizes are available.
Some presentations may not be available in some countries.
