Understanding Guaphan DM Syrup: A Comprehensive Guide to Its Uses and Safety

Guaphan DM Syrup is a medication designed to temporarily relieve coughs caused by minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as those associated with the common cold. It also helps loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions, making coughs more productive. This blog post provides detailed information about its composition, indications, precautions, dosage, side effects, and other relevant details.

Composition

Each 5 ml of Guaphan DM Syrup contains:

  • Guaifenesin (EP) 100 mg: An expectorant that reduces the adhesiveness and surface tension of respiratory tract secretions, easing their expectoration [the act of expelling mucus or phlegm from the respiratory system].
  • Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide (USP) 10 mg: A centrally acting antitussive that elevates the threshold for coughing without inhibiting ciliary activity [tiny hair-like structures in the respiratory tract that help move mucus out].

Clinical Pharmacology

Guaifenesin works by reducing the adhesiveness and surface tension of respiratory tract secretions, thereby facilitating their removal. The expectorant effect can reduce the frequency of coughs. Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide acts centrally to increase the threshold for coughing, ensuring that therapeutic dosages do not interfere with the normal function of cilia [hair-like structures in the respiratory tract that help clear mucus].
