This blog post will provide you with all the necessary information about this medication, including its composition, uses, dosage, precautions, side effects, and more.

Introduction to Soolan Paediatric Syrup

Soolan Paediatric Syrup is a pediatric formulation that provides symptomatic relief from common cold and flu symptoms such as productive cough, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea [excessive discharge from the nose], and sneezing. It combines a decongestant, antihistamine, and expectorant to ensure fast and effective relief for your child.

Composition

Each 5ml (teaspoonful) of Soolan Paediatric Syrup contains the following active ingredients:

  • Chlorpheniramine maleate 1mg [an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms]
  • Phenylephrine HCI 2.5mg [a decongestant that reduces swelling in nasal passages]
  • Guaifenesin (glyceryl guaiacolate) 50mg [an expectorant that helps loosen mucus]

The excipients include ascorbic acid, sucrose, saccharin sodium, sodium citrate, quinoline yellow, disodium edetate, ethanol 96%, glycerin, strawberry flavor, and purified water.

Indications

Soolan Paediatric Syrup is useful for treating children suffering from:

  • Productive cough
  • Nasal congestion
  • Rhinorrhea [runny nose]
  • Sneezing associated with allergies or the common cold

Warnings/Precautions

This preparation should be avoided by individuals who are hypersensitive to any of its components, as well as those in a coma.

Parents should exercise caution when administering Soolan Paediatric Syrup to children with pyloroduodenal obstruction [a condition where the passage of food from the stomach to the small intestine is blocked]. Dose reduction may be necessary in cases of epilepsy, glaucoma, or hypertension.

Discontinue its use before surgical procedures to avoid interference with anesthesia. If urine is collected within 24 hours of taking Soolan Syrup, a metabolite of guaifenesin may cause color interference in determinations of urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA).

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dosages for Soolan Paediatric Syrup are as follows:

  • Children 1-2 years of age: 5ml (1 teaspoonful) every 4-6 hours
  • Children 2-6 years of age: 5ml (1 teaspoonful) every 4-6 hours
  • Children 6-12 years of age: 10ml (2 teaspoonfuls) every 4-6 hours

If you miss a dose:

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible.
  • If it is almost time for the next regular dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.

Side Effects

Soolan Paediatric Syrup is generally well-tolerated, but some minor side effects have been reported:

  • Drowsiness [feeling sleepy], which may diminish after a few days of continued treatment
  • Paradoxical stimulation [increased activity or restlessness], especially with high doses

Other less frequently reported side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Psychomotor impairment [difficulty with movement or coordination]
  • Antimuscarinic effects such as urinary retention [difficulty urinating], dry mouth, blurred vision, and gastrointestinal disturbances

Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions like bronchospasm [tightening of airways], angioedema [swelling under the skin], anaphylaxis [severe allergic reaction], rashes, and photosensitivity reactions [sensitivity to sunlight] have been reported.

Very rarely, tinnitus [ringing in the ears], extrapyramidal effects [movement disorders], dizziness, confusion, depression, sleep disturbances, tremor, convulsions, palpitation, arrhythmias [irregular heartbeat], hypotension [low blood pressure], blood disorders, liver dysfunction, and exfoliative dermatitis [severe skin inflammation] have been observed.

Overdosage

Symptoms and signs of overdosage may include sedation [drowsiness], paradoxical stimulation of the CNS [central nervous system], psychosis [mental disorder characterized by delusions and hallucinations], convulsions, antimuscarinic effects, and arrhythmias.

In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be provided with special attention to cardiac, respiratory, renal, and hepatic functions and fluid and electrolyte balance. Treatment may include gastric lavage or induction of emesis by syrup of ipecac if administered within the first few hours after ingestion. Activated charcoal and cathartics may also be given to minimize absorption.

Drug Interactions

Concomitant usage of sedating antihistamines, benzodiazepines, chloral hydrate, or tridofos sodium with Soolan Paediatric Syrup may result in enhanced sedative effects. Increased antimuscarinic effects may occur upon concomitant administration of Soolan Paediatric Syrup with antimuscarinics. Concomitant administration with amine, imipramine, or nortriptyline may increase both sedative and antimuscarinic effects.
