COLI-URINAL Effervescent Granules - Information Leaflet

Each 100 gm contains:

  • Hexamine: 10 gm
  • Khellin: 35 mg
  • Piperazine Hexahydrate (as citrate): 3 gm
  • Effervescent base: q.s. to 100 gm

Properties

The antiseptic action of Coli-urinal depends mainly upon the presence of hexamine, which in acid urine is slowly hydrolyzed to formaldehyde and ammonia. The peak concentration of formaldehyde is attained in 2 hours, which acts as a potent antiseptic that may be effective in some cases where other antibacterials fail, especially in chronic cases.

Khellin, by its direct relaxant action on the smooth muscles, relieves the colic that usually accompanies urinary disorders. Piperazine adds to the benefit of Coli-urinal by increasing uric acid excretion and dissolving urate crystals.

Coli-urinal is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and is rapidly eliminated in the urine.

Indications

  • Urinary tract infections: pyelitis, pyelonephritis, cystitis, urethritis, etc.
  • May help as an adjuvant in cases of recurrent urate calculi.

Side Effects

In occasional patients, slight nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur. Overdoses may rarely produce nervous complications, including somnolence, dizziness, and muscular incoordination due to piperazine, especially in patients with renal function disturbances.

Contraindications

  • Impairment of hepatic function due to the liberation of ammonia from hexamine in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Severe or moderate renal failure.
  • Severe dehydration, metabolic acidosis, neurological disturbances, epilepsy.

Drug Interactions

Sulphathiazole (and possibly other sulfonamides) forms insoluble urinary crystals with formaldehyde, so avoid such combinations with hexamine-containing preparations.

Dosage and Administration

  • Coli-urinal is best given after meals.
  • 1 tablespoonful in 1/2 glass of water, three times daily (t.d.s.).
