Each 100 gm contains: Hexamine: 10 gm Khellin: 35 mg Piperazine Hexahydrate (as citrate): 3 gm Effervescent base: q.s. to 100 gm Properties The antiseptic action of Coli-urinal depends mainly upon the presence of hexamine , which in acid urine is slowly hydrolyzed to formaldehyde and ammonia . The peak concentration of formaldehyde is attained in 2 hours, which acts as a potent antiseptic that may be effective in some cases where other antibacterials fail, especially in chronic cases. Khellin , by its direct relaxant action on the smooth muscles, relieves the colic that usually accompanies urinary disorders. Piperazine adds to the benefit of Coli-urinal by increasing uric acid excretion and dissolving urate crystals. Coli-urinal is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and is rapidly eliminated in the urine.
