  • Do not take Torbener if you are allergic to cefdinir, other cephalosporin antibiotics, penicillins, or other drugs.

What is Torbener?

Torbener is a medication that contains the active ingredient cefdinir, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It comes in two forms: capsules and powder for oral suspension.

What are the uses of Torbener?

Torbener is used to treat mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria in adults and adolescents. These infections include:

  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute maxillary sinusitis
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections

Torbener is also used to treat some bacterial infections in pediatric patients (6 months to 12 years old), including:

  • Acute bacterial otitis media
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections

How to Take Torbener

Capsules:

  • Torbener capsules can be taken with or without food.
  • The recommended dosage for adults and adolescents (13 years and older) is 600 mg per day. This can be taken as a single dose (once daily) or as two divided doses (twice daily).
  • The recommended duration of treatment depends on the type of infection.

Powder for Oral Suspension:

  • Torbener for oral suspension should be shaken well before each use.
  • The recommended dosage for pediatric patients (6 months to 12 years old) is based on body weight, up to a maximum dose of 600 mg per day. This can be taken as a single dose (once daily) or as two divided doses (twice daily).
  • The recommended duration of treatment depends on the type of infection.

Directions for Mixing Torbener for Oral Suspension:

  • Follow the instructions on the product label for mixing the powder with water.
  • The suspension can be used for 10 days after it is mixed. Discard any unused portion after 10 days.

Dosage for Patients with Kidney Problems

  • The dosage of Torbener may need to be adjusted for patients with kidney problems.
  • Your doctor will determine the appropriate dosage for you.

Possible Side Effects of Torbener

  • Torbener can cause some side effects. These include:

    • Diarrhea
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Stomach pain
    • Headache
    • Vaginal yeast infection
    • Skin rash
  • Serious side effects are possible but uncommon. These include:

    • Severe allergic reactions
    • Seizures (especially in patients with kidney problems)
    • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (C. Diff)
  • This is not a complete list of side effects. Call your doctor right away if you have any side effects that bother you or do not go away.

Warnings and Precautions

  • Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions before taking Torbener, including kidney problems, colitis, or allergies to antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
  • Torbener may not be right for all pregnant or breastfeeding women. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking Torbener during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
