Understanding Larogen: A Guide for Patients

This guide aims to provide clear and concise information about Larogen, a medication containing Lamotrigine, for patients dealing with epilepsy. Understanding its indications, benefits, dosage, potential side effects, and precautions is essential for a safe and effective treatment journey.

About Larogen

What is Larogen?

Larogen is a medication designed to assist in managing epilepsy. It contains Lamotrigine, which works by stabilizing neuronal membranes and inhibiting neurotransmitter release. This helps control seizures in individuals with epilepsy.

How Larogen Works

Lamotrigine, the active ingredient in Larogen, acts by inhibiting voltage-sensitive sodium channels. This action stabilizes neuronal membranes and prevents the excessive release of neurotransmitters, ultimately reducing the occurrence of seizures.

Indications: When is Larogen Prescribed?

Add-On Therapy

Larogen is prescribed as an add-on therapy in the following cases:

  • Partial epilepsy with or without secondary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
  • Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
  • Seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in pediatric and adult patients.

Monotherapy

In adults with partial seizures who are already receiving treatment with a single enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drug (EIAD), Larogen can be used for conversion to monotherapy.

Contraindications: When Not to Use Larogen

Larogen should not be used in individuals who:

  1. Are hypersensitive to the medication.
  2. Have significant hepatic (liver) or renal (kidney) failure.

Precautions

Serious Skin Rash

Serious skin rash, though rare, has been reported, especially with rapid titration of Lamotrigine. Discontinuation of the medication is crucial at the first sign of a rash, unless it is determined not to be drug-related.

Aseptic Meningitis

Lamotrigine can cause aseptic meningitis, which may include symptoms like headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, rash, and sensitivity to light. Patients should contact their healthcare professional immediately if these symptoms occur.

Warning

Cases of life-threatening serious rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, have been reported with Lamotrigine. The risk of serious rash is higher in pediatric patients. Factors that may increase the risk include coadministration with valproate and exceeding recommended doses.

Adverse Effects: What to Watch For

Common side effects of Larogen may include headache, tiredness, rash, nausea, dizziness, diplopia (double vision), blurred vision, insomnia, and coordination abnormalities. Infrequent side effects may include weight decrease, chest pain, dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain), and anxiety.

Dosage: How to Take Larogen

Adding to AED regimen containing valproate:

  • Usual maintenance dose: 100-200 mg/day.

Adding to EIADs (except valproate):

Children (2-12 Years of Age)

Adding to AED regimen containing valproate:

  • Usual maintenance dose: 1 to 5 mg/kg/day (maximum 200 mg/day).

Adding to EIADs (except valproate):

  • Usual maintenance dose: 5-15 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg/day in two divided doses).

Dosage Titration for Children (2-12 Years of Age)
