Understanding Motion (Meloxicam) for Inflammatory Arthritis

What is Motion and What is it Used For?

Motion is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) containing the active ingredient meloxicam. It works by reducing inflammation and pain in joints and muscles.

Motion is used to treat:

  • Flare-ups of osteoarthritis (short-term)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (long-term)
  • Ankylosing spondylitis (long-term)

How Motion Can Help

By reducing inflammation, Motion relieves joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. This improves mobility and quality of life for individuals with chronic inflammatory joint conditions.

When taken as directed, Motion:

  • Eases osteoarthritis flare-up symptoms
  • Controls rheumatoid arthritis over the long-term
  • Manages ankylosing spondylitis and improves spinal flexibility

Motion does not provide immediate pain relief for acute flare-ups.

Proper Use of Motion

Dosage:

  • Osteoarthritis flare-ups: 7.5 mg tablet once daily, may increase to 15 mg once daily
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: 15 mg tablet once daily, may decrease to 7.5 mg once daily
  • Ankylosing spondylitis: 15 mg tablet once daily, may decrease to 7.5 mg once daily

Swallow the tablet whole with water, during a meal.

Do not exceed 15 mg per day.

Duration:

  • For osteoarthritis, use Motion only for short periods during flare-ups.
  • For rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, take Motion daily on a long-term basis, as directed by your doctor.

Do not take Motion for longer than prescribed.

Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Do not double the dose.

Who Should Not Take Motion?

You should not use Motion if you:

  • Are allergic to meloxicam or NSAIDs
  • Are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
  • Are under 16 years old
  • Have active stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding
  • Have severe liver, kidney, or heart problems

Warning Signs to Discuss with Your Doctor Before Taking Motion:

  • Heart disease or stroke risk factors
  • High blood pressure
  • Previous NSAID-induced stomach bleeding
  • Asthma or swelling of nasal passages after taking NSAIDs

Important Safety Information for Motion

Serious Risks

  • Increased heart attack or stroke risk: Possible with NSAID use at high doses for extended periods
  • Stomach and intestine bleeding or holes (perforation): Can be fatal; stop drug if this occurs
  • Severe skin reactions (eg. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome): Seek immediate medical care if rash or skin peeling develops

Other Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects involve the digestive system, including stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation.

Motion can also cause dizziness, headache, skin rashes and itching, fluid retention, and hypertension. More serious side effects are less common but possible.

Always report any troubling side effects to your prescribing doctor.

Tips for Patients Taking Motion

  • Take with food to minimize stomach upset
  • Stay hydrated and watch for fluid retention
  • Monitor blood pressure if previously elevated
  • Avoid excessive sunlight exposure

Use caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how Motion affects you. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.

Patients with inflammatory arthritis taking Motion should maintain regular doctor visits to monitor for side effects and adjust treatment accordingly. Promptly reporting side effects can help catch problems early.

In most cases, the benefits of controlling inflammatory arthritis with Motion outweigh the risks as long as used carefully under medical supervision.
